Reliance MF: No redemptions
Three years back, I have invested some money in Reliance MF Tax saving scheme. To be precie on 17th August 2005. I might have been naive or plain stupid to trust my money with company run by Anil Ambani. However, having realized this mistake, I tried to rectify this mistake as early as possible.
Here are order details
I placed an order thrice to redempt my money from Reliance Tax Savings Scheme. All the three times, my Order was Rejected Saying that it is in lockin period. Following are the dates and ORder Details (slightly edited to avoid details)

I fail to understand how 4th September and 23rd September are respectively not more than three years after 17th August 2005.
I think one has to pay his price by trusting his money with Reliance.
I will never ever again put a single rupee with “R-World”, there are better ways of writing off your money.
I am sure there may be many others who’ve faced this issue.
An open (and somewhat humble) letter to Jihadis
Dear Jihadis (as you claim yourself to be),
I have been refraining myself from writing for quite a while about your misdemeanours. However, I think, the time has certainly come to write to you about what I generally think about your Jihad. Before I move any further let me accept, as far as purely religious thoughts go, I have one of the highest regards for the religion of Islam, so don’t be confused about that. Now let’s come to some questions I have about your Jihad and possible suggestions of how you should go about achieving (that may sound somewhat preposterous, still..)
First, let us all know what your agenda is – that is if you have any agenda. Lets for the arguments’ sake we assume that your agenda is to make the entire world follow the path to the Kingdom of Allah. Personally, I won’t have objections about this agenda and I don’t have. But I do have serious reservations about your way of trying to achieve it through the use “terror” as we’d shortly see, what you “consider” as terror is not beyond a noise. So having accepted this agenda, you should set your path to achieve that goal and allow yourselves some time to achieve it, it won’t happen overnight, which some of you might be tempted to believe. The times are not same as the times of prophet so assuming what worked in the times of prophet to work now is naive at best.
First about your purported acts of “terror”. Let’s look at recent bombings in Bangalore/Ahmedabad and Delhi. How many people were killed in to-to due to your acts of terror? say about 200. In these three cities the number of people killed in road accidents will not be substantially smaller than this or the number of “innocent” people killed because a rich druken brat runs over poor people sleeping on footpath (for lack of any reasonable house) will be somewhat same (in short your risk-reward is not favourable). He is set free, runs “television reality shows” and you poor people have to hide from the government, face the wrath of general public. I think at best you are doing injustice to yourself and your cause. This is further aggrevated by the fact that it doesn’t even create terror. People continue to do their jobs, life returns to normal in the “spirit of the city” and there is a general public apathy. Worse, still you and your keen become vulnerable to arrests and government attrocities. Is it helping at all? A substantial act of terror would be one where the number of deaths caused by acts of terror are higher than that of a serious natural calamity. You are simply no where near to that. Friends, you gotta think over it. What you did (assuming you really did it) on 9/11 was a reasonable act of terror. Even then what did it achieve anything? Nothing… Before, I go further, I might want to add something that I just recalled, the number of people killed due to your acts of terror, is not even a fifth of the number of suicides some farmers committed due largely to the apathy of the Government and the same Government is chasing you (or will atleast show it will chase you!)
Does this mean it is the end of the world for your cause? No, provided you are willing to consider some humble suggestions that I’d shortly offer
I agree that America is your #1 enemy (or atleast there is a popular belief about it being so.) However someone being a #1 enemy should not be disregarded for his qualities. Have you seen how americanized most of the world is – How did it achieve that through acts of terror? Well yes, but as a terror disguised behind a beautiful name of “democracy/freedom etcetra.” So there’s something you can learn from Uncle Sam, which I am afriad you are failing to learn time and again. No I am not saying open your version of McDonalds or Coke on every nook and corner of the world, there’s a substantial entry barrier for this, but there are other things that should be tried -
First you should have a marketing department akin to Hollywood, that’d showcase to the world how great your agenda is, How some american (or an infidel) can become a popular hero in your version of Hollywood and later goes on to become head of the State (I agree this might be against your conventional wisdom, but friends these are not the times to trust the conventional wisdom). You’ve to show the path to Kingdom of Allah is a dream path and generally create all the paraphernelia that should be associated with such marketing departmet like Gossip magzines etcetra. Remember for something to stick, it should be bombarded again and again in a manner people like it.
Second, embrace technology – Look at the Koreans – they are virtually sweeping the world with their cell phones (I bet some of the cell-phones that you might be using to “plan” your acts of “terror” will be Korean.) So while Samsung and LG continue to be desirable Brands, you continue to be social outcastes, hiding in caves in God forsaken (albeit beautiful) places. or even go east further, look at the Japs and how they took revenge for the Atom Bombs (but be careful don’t end up being Japs).
Third , identify your strengths and play to your strenghts – One observation that I have might help. Some of your people are gifted with art. Why’d you not consider playing this to your strength. Create your version of a Rock Culture (it does not have to emulate the present one or doesn’t even have to have a Woodstock festival) but it should have drug abuse (which might be against Islam, so we can spare that) and promiscuous sex (this is important!!!!). That’d get far many converts to your thinking and you can certainly leverage the following then.
Finally, I might offer, learn to be patient to achieve what you’ve to achieve, it takes time. I am re-iterating it becuase some early success might distort your vision and you’d end up being the victims of your own success (remember Japs?)
This is all I have to offer.
Is load shedding real?
While I type this post, my laptop and Internet connection are powered by an Inverter (which happens quite regularly, thanks to MSEB). I was wondering about possible real reasons of the load shedding (Well the well-known reason is Shortage of Power). Lets see
Some answers I am trying to figure out
1. What is the actual shortage of electricity in Maharashtra and what is the trend in last five years for Electricity Demand and that of Production? The reason I want to get into this is – I doubt whether we have a substantial increase in net demand that justifies almost a 6-7 times increase in load shedding (possibly more).
Looking at some information from MSEDCL website - Which conveniently speaks about Peak Demand
The Peak Demand in Maharashtra is about 13500 MW (This is a positive adjustment of 500 MWs to the highest reported demand.) where as the peak generation capacity is 9300MW which results in almost a 30% shortage of net power in Maharashtra. Without questioning the authenticity of these figures we’ve a roughly 4000MW of power shortage (at peak demand) no where steady state demand is mentioned. For the argument sake lets assume it is at about 80% of peak demand that is roughly 10800 MW.
Of course we might ask was the Government sleeping while the demand increased in last 4 years and doing nothing about additional power generation. But there are a considerably large number of problems with the Government so we’d spare them on this one for now!!
1. What is the percentage of loss of power that happens as a consequence of transmission and distribution losses? Where do we stand vis-a-vis rest of the world?
As per another statistics from the website of the company zone wise Distribution Loss is alarming the highest being as close to 47% and smallest being 12%. Incidently highest distribution loss comes from the zone which elects our Honourable Chief Minister (People deserve the Government they get) As per the website lets stick to average load shedding of 30%.
From another wikipedia article the TnD losses in US and UK were roughly 7.2% to 7.8% reported in 1995. (I must admit I didn’t dig deep enough to figure out latest figure, but lets assume they stand where they are.) Lets allow ourselves a “developing country premium” of twice those losses and say we can tolerate TnD losses upto 15%. Which means we are having a 15% little too much power wasted in TnD losses.
A quick summery we will be able to save almost 2000MW of peak load and 1500 MW of average load (ball park caluclations), if we bring down the losses to “reasonable levels”. That stands a net shortage that is half of the current shortage (inspite of claimed increase in demand)
Further from the same website of MSEDCL, the claim is that since the electricity cannot be stored, maximum load shedding has to occur during evening hours (ie. 6PM to 10PM). The pattern of current load shedding does not more than one and half hours of load shedding during those hours and a considerable percentage of load shedding occurs during day time.
All these facts lead to an obvious question – Is the power shortage real or orchestrated?
Let’s look at two other “seemingly uncorrelated facts” -
1. Is it a coincidence that the load sheding has become more prominent after the (failed) IPO of Reliance Power?
2. Is it a coincidence that load sheding has become more prominent after the nuclear deal became large enough an issue that could potentially have toppled the Government?
3. Is it a coincidence that the load shedding has become prominent after a surge in Crude prices world over and mounting losses of State Run companies in providing subsidized fuels and substantially high usage of diesel powered Generators by businesses?
3. Or is it because we are facing an election next year?
We’d soon find out what exactly is the reason – possible things that I can see coming are
1. MSEDCL buys power from Reliance Power at atrocious premium. (I don’t think I have to speak in details about this)
2. Load shedding suddenly vanishes in January/February. A little elaboration on this – First create a problem that is perceived as acute and then mysteriously solve that problem right at the time of election.
3. Prices of diesel used for “generators” are increased to match “unsubisidized levels” (This is one way dealing with the losses or there’s “someone else whose company’s name starts with R” who can provide this diesel at market price).
Ofcourse, inspite of these facts I am of a strong opinion that energy should be used judiciously by human beings (because that puts a considerable strain on finite resources to generate energy), but still these facts don’t quite explain why we’d have a 7 folds increase in load shedding (Which used to be for like 4 hours on Thursdays to suddenly average of 5-6 hours everyday on weekdays)?
Anybody?
Tata Motors “Singur Plant” – A Conspiracy Theory
The way events unfold sometimes tell a lot about what might be the reasons behind the way they unfold. One such controversial issue right now is the “Singur Nano Plant” of Tata Motors. (Disclaimer: I am a Tata Motors shareholder). This is my attempt to create a story out of it.
First lets list down the pieces of the puzzle -
1. Government used to be (and perhaps still is) a large stakeholder in Maruti – to whom Tata’s Nano will be a direct competition and if proven successful, would topple Maruti as #1 car maker in India.
2. When the “Nano” plant was being considered, the government was at the mercy of “Left Parties”
3. Recently left has withdrawn support from the Government.
4. Ratan Tata is not a fool to consider West Bengal as a desired option when there are certainly better options in India.
Now, lets see how these pieces of the puzzle fit.
Ratan Tata is allowed to build “Nano” only if he promises that production will happen in West Bengal. Why? Left is a major supporter of Government and uses its muscle power to get the coveted project to the only government they have to showcase how “investor friendly” left is. Incentive for government to do this is thanks to its stake in Maruti and rich dividends it pays.
Mr. Tata agrees and Government of West Bengal allocates a land to Tata Nano Project and the work proceeds. Ms. Mamata Banerjee “protests” against it but apparantly is calmed. Nano is unveiled in January and received successfully (atleast at the launch) by all the spectators and work commenses for commercial production.
In the meanwhile left withdraws support from the government on the nuclear issue (I’d write about it sometime later, but I am of an opinion, left’s opposition to nuclear project is not completely misplaced. But about that later.)
Now we have a government is West Bengal and a Government in center and in addition to that all the vested interests are as they are. Is there a way it can be projected that Left is not investor friendly and it’d be better if Tatas move to a state where “Congress is in power” (I am afraid, Tatas won’t have too many choices… except may be Maharashtra) and thus bargain some goodwill in an election year? Possible, eminently so How? Here’s the recipee – instigate an agitator who’s known to have reservations about this project (which originally might themselves have been part of an agenda.) to continue to disturb the developments at what would be a first engineering product, conceived/created and designed in India.
Net loosers
- Tatas to some extent (Mr. Ratan Tata is a shrewd businessman – he’d announce one fine day I am moving all Nano production to Indonesia say and the Government will be red faced) .
- Left parties – whose image is tarnished (as if they had any)
- Me as a shareholder
Net gainers
- None (except for a perception of being able to successfully woe Tatas to a Government friendly state)
- Other Vested Interest groups – Who are yet conceiving their “small people car” and will be benefited if Nano’s launch is delayed.
Is there something else? I fail to see it.
why market might have bottomed out
Today is a historic day that officially declares the bull market is over. Ironically, it might also be the day the market has bottomed out. Why I think so?
1. We’ve got the worst news – inflation hitting double digits..
2. Bank Nifty didnt break the low made on June 10 while both nifty and sensex broke the low.. Visibly there are signs of bottoming out
3. Reliance broke the dreadful 2100 level, its obvious that everyone will turn uber bearish now..
Logically, there might be a small downside left 5-10% but I think all the froth is getting out now.. Time to go and buy stocks one wants to.. Not saying they are cheap, but now the risk reward ratio is favourable.
I’d start picking stocks which I wanted to invest in – (Infact I already started.. Praj / IDFC to name a few.)
Stocks that will give good returns should be IT, Consumer Goods, pharma appears to be a bit of a bubble now.. One way to look at good stocks to buy now are – those that are still above 200EMA or are atleast 10-15% above Jan lows. (I know IDFC doesnt fit that criteria, still..
) There’s something with all the TV stocks.. Did nibble a bit of NDTV as well.
and Subex ‘cos I’ve met the CEO of the company and he’s an ultra smart guy.. I’d trust his management. O did I miss ballarpur (but I am in that stock for quite some time now) and sugars? and some brave guys should try banks for a possible up move of 20-30%
(sounds funny, with inflation hitting double digits and another repo rate hike in the offing..
)
Risks still remain especially the way US is delicately poised……
Lets see.
Nadir of News Reporting
Recently while I had gone for a dinner with folks from my previous company, They raised a few eyebrows too many when I mentioned that I didnt know about ‘khali’ the latest news sensation on most of the news channels. However, to save myself further embarrasement I replied, oh I vaguely remember seeing some program featuing the eminent guy.. I am really not up-to-date with the latest news happening. My news reading thus far has been limited to only bloomberg and yahoo! finance, admittedly for entertainment alone…
News channels is something I have stayed away from except CNBC TV 18 (which I regularly watch primarily for some good models aka news readers aka.. VJs and entertainment as well) I have written at length about my frustrations with News channels in one of my favourite posts “बॉडी बनाओं बाबा….“. However, it seems news channels are really in the business of creating innumerable jobs, not necessarily for two-legged animals alone. Or is it the other way round? Not just two legged animals are creating jobs for news channel reporters etcetra? Either way .. Here are some of the snippets which I received in a forwarded email… Click on individual links to get a clearer picture…

Hindi songs lyrics trivia…..
I stumbled upon Guruji – music somehow. Just wanted to check out how it is. For a change its quite neat stuff from Guruji…. (I have had slightly unimpressive experiences with their search but that is quite a long time back..) Without digressing further, I’d come back to the topic of some minor goof ups I did notice in Hindi song lyrics.. This list is by no means exaustive,
1. There’s an old song from movie Haasil sung by Abhijit (who incidently shares name with me!) which goes like आँखें भी होती है दिल कि ज़ुबान! (Aankhen bhi hotee hain dil ki jubaan. ) – which when translated literally means “eyes are also the tongue of your heart..” where as in my opinion a better lyrics could have been “आँखें ही होती है दिल कि ज़ुबान! (aankhen hi hotee hain dil ki jubaan)”. which means your heart speaks through your eyes only!! Anyways, why don’t the playbacks suggest such improvisations.
2. This one is a bit gross from the movie “OSO” .. आँखों मे तेरी अजब सी अजब सी अदाएं हैं दिल को बनाये जो पतन्ग सासे तेरी वोह हवाएं हैं!!” (Now what does the lyricist imply by teri hawaae? Fart? ”
) a better would have been which should have been …. दिल को बनाये पतन्ग जो हवाएं वोह तेरी सांसे है” which means the winds that make my mind a kite are your breaths.. A much better choice for a romantic song.. Former one might have suited for a parody!
Just some non-sense nothing else. Happy weekending……
MSFT pulls the plug… Next bid at 15 bucks a share!!
Finally, yahoo! got what it wanted!! or should I say what it deserved? I believe the amount microsoft was offering yahoo was much more than the worth of the company. Here is a quick summary of what Yahoo! is actually worth. At Fridays closing prices Google was quoting at about 15 times its earnings, whereas yahoo was quoting at about 38 times its earnings. Which one of the two is cheaper? Now it is upto yahoo not only to prove that the price MSFT was paying for yahoo was just, but they’ve to transcend that, lets see whether yahoo is up for the task.
Ofcourse, yahoo is a company which is known for Royal screwups right from not acquiring Google (in hindsight that was a good thing to’ve happnened) , applied symantics and so on… You cannot have chairman of an Internet company who’ve not used Email before joining the company!!
Personally why I would say yahoo is a short!! Yahoo mail puts mail from my own Yahoo ID sent to myself into “spam” folder. It does not stop at that it goes well beyond that asking me to fillup a captcha so that spammers cannot use Yahoo for spamming. If a company cannot get such basic things right, I doubt why MSFT was paying such an exorbitant price for YHOO, or it was its own way of letting GOOG know that they are chasing them? Are they really?
I must confess atleast one great product yahoo has got is its Finance portal. It is certainly neat.
Next bid for YHOO from MSFT will be at 15bucks a share and Yahoo won’t decline it!!
Flashback : Forget Reservations We’ve bigger fish to fry..
In the flashback series, I will be posting my older posts that were somewhere else. I’d try to update the posts so as to make them relevant in the present context. This is second of the flashback series.
There has been a considerable ruckus about the proposed reservation system in the IITs and IIMs. Though, this issue is important and deserves attention and dialogue, there is a far more important issue, largely un-noticed, which calls for a much diligent attention. The issue at large is that of the “education system” in India. We need to fix some basic building blocks before we can argue about the issues which are largely peripheral, yes I consider the issue of “reservations” a largely peripheral issue. Let”s get started.
First and foremost, the education system under which most of us have studied is, “Lord Macaulay”s gift to us, the system developed to create “babus” that will obey and ask not many questions, serving the purpose of the “empire”. Post independence, in our “tryst with destiny” did we undertake any educational reforms? Did we ask ourselves the questions, is this the education system, on which we will found the “Independent Nation”? The answer is loud “NO”. We just carried forward the education as we did largely with law, post and railways. We did certainly miss an opportunity there, an important one. And the present state where we are is largely a consequence of such ignorance.
Once we never paid any attention to serious education, we employed the system of reservations for the under-priviledged. Which probably made some sense five decades ago. But the very system did fail to create a young generation which asked questions and thus we created babus, yet again, not serving the cause of “empire” this time, but learned (rather literate) and busy maintaining status quo. The result is where we stand today. If one notices, the state funded schools (one of the schools where I myself studied) are suffering from lack of funds to hire any serious teachers, further aggravated by the mandatory reservations for teachers, where a student is denied a quality education. In comes the “International School” (and they have very funny names, some have names like “Education Valley” just like “Amby Valley” and one went on to the extentof naming one school “Sharad Pawar International School”. Naming “National School” would have been adventurous enough!), run by private organizations, charging exorbitant fees. Now this leads to a bigger problem, that is – access to these schools is possible to the people who can afford to send their children to these “International Schools” ie. well to do people or the IT upstarts. I am not too sure about the quality of education in the international schools, which may be good. But the proliferation of such “elite only” school has fundamental bearing on the upbringing of a child, in a broader sense. I will narrate my experience and juxtapose it with that of my nephews”. The school where I studied had admittedly horrible teachers and a few good ones too but it had students from all the strata of the society, economically and socially. That was important, because I was never blinded by the fact that the world is just composed of my “alikes” economically and socially. When I talk with my nephews, they have friends whose parents are from a very similar background as theirs. This results in a certain degree of monotonity in experience and that is a child”s great loss!! Thus we are encouraging almost silently, the society being divided, right from the word go, between the ones who can afford and who cannot.
Further, about the way merit is determined in our examination system, is based on the result of one particular examination and examinations can easily be hacked. And what about someone who has been good but just falls sick on the day of examination, should he be denied access to (supposedly) better education? And certain entrance examinations are our gateway to “premiere institutions”. More about that later. This issue can alone be discussed at length, but thats for some other time.
Shouldn”t it be considered primary responsibilty of the Government to ensure, free and compulsory, primary education (primary education the way I will like to define is – education upto the higher secondary school in the present british education system)? Have we not failed miserably in that? About the subject of reservation, it is important for the Government to understand, that once you make it free and compulsory, there is no question of reservations that exists.
Lets come now to the state of education at slightly higher levels, graduation – the engineering/medical colleges etcetra. At best, it is just prudent to keep mum about those, since the ones who have attended those will tell you the real story about the politicians’ cash cows. I am not going to speak about the non-professional graduate colleges (like science/arts/commerce colleges), for I have no first hand experience about them, but if one looks around with an open eye, the answers are there for every one.
Lets come to the premiere education systems now and deal with the issue of reservations quickly. If you ask my opinion, it is simple – “If yo ensure that access to free and compulsory primary education is guaranteed to every child, it is really not required to have any provisions later on.” But the problem with our premiere institutions is not just that of “reservations”, they do suffer from a bigger problem, and having studied in one of them, allows me to speak with a certain degree of authenticity about it and its not just notional. Lets ask ourselves an honest question – “What is the value that the premiere education institutes aka IITs and IIMs delivered to our nation?” They surely boast of “great alumni network” but have they constitued any meaningful, measurable value to the society as a whole? Or are they just “high profile bodyshops”? The situation is largely so – for they are known for, thanks to our media, the highest dollar paychecks that student get once they graduate from these institutes. The quality of education and that of the faculty is beyond doubt first grade, but the value contributed to the society remains almost miniscule.
A few concluding remarks – We need fundamental reforms, similar if not greater in magnitude like the economical reforms (supposedly) undertaken in early nineties by then finance minister. But human resource development is not certainly the most saught after porfolio in Goverment, and the ones who get that, are busy edititng textbooks, making astrology compulsory and reservations in the premier institutes. There is a call for a large government initiated, private funded overhaul, that will start building things ground up rather than patching up leaks. This requires far greater determination and conviction, and Mr. Arjun Singh is not the only one who is guilty of lack of that. After all people deserve the government they get.
Flashback : Of nothing in particular and everything in general
In the flashback series, I’d be reposting some of my older blog posts here. I’d make an attempt to post those that are still relevant now or try to update them in the current context as best as I can, it is entirely possible that I might contradict myself, but aren’t we supposed to grow?
Time changes everything….
Originally published on – 18th July 2006
A while back, an interesting conversation happened between me and my friend… The conversation started with how the guys at the customs mess around when you return from anywhere and drifted to topics like, “why polygamy or killing is immoral?”….. Some excerpts….
Initially, pilot (my friend) started with .. well I don”t think there should be any laws any borders, let people do whatever they want to do.. (He”s the guy who has this idea, that we should not ban narcotics, infact we should make it freely available, so that people who want to consume it, reach their destiny rather quickly)
I said, Laws are nothing but “best practises” followed based upon the wisdom gathered, I don”t have a stand that they are good in anyway, but there is nothing that you can do about it….
But even then I won”t say killing someone innocent (in your frame of reference) is immoral…… and there is a reason why polygamy is immoral to…
Someone once said to me.. “The best wat to judge whethere something is moral or immoral, is try creating a mental picture and assume everyone starts doing the particular act in question. And in that sense, killing is immoral.. because if everyone starts killing, there”d be no one left to kill…. In a very similar sense, polygammy is immoral because, by the laws of nature, the offsprings of human species have to be fed, attended to and taken care of for atleast 10 years before they are on their own. What will happen to the children that are produced, who will take care of them? And if they are not taken care of properly there is a good chance that their survival is jeopardised.. So in that reference, polygamy is immoral.. A dog could never afford polygamy if its offsprings needed to be attended for say 3 years. And lets say there exists a society in which polygamy is a common practise.. You will still have to take care of the offsprings…. right? And which ones you”d prefer the most? Your own…. Right?
Pilots argument – Well you are making your decisions based upon something that you are seeing for say 10000 years and life did exist before that.. and honestly, you don”t know what we are here for, we just amuse ourselves by building societies and following “best practises” that we have inherited for generations..
My argument – How else would you go about it? I fully agree with you that we really don”t know what we are here for and where we are going.. and probably we will never learn that in our lifetime, but we have a hope that someone say 20000 years down the line may be able to understand that, and what is the best that you can do.. to ensure that someone indeed gets a chance to learn it.. So you have to do your best to actually support that process and how will you ensure that by ensuring that life has got a chance to further… In that very context Killing someone is immoral because you are interfering with the process..
There were certain lighter moments in this conversation as well.. thanks to another friend……. but most of that is not printable.. I hope one gets the drift…….
